Maintenance Tips for Your EFTPOS Machine

14 Feb

Your point of sale device is your business’ lifeline. Without it, your customer can’t pay for your products or services, or at least not in a way that’s most convenient. Surprisingly enough, however, many people don’t care for their EFTPOS machines nearly as well as they should be, and that’s understandable! Running a business is demanding enough, and it can be hard to find time to stop and do the little day-to-day things.

Regardless, it’s important to remember that looking after your machine will make a huge difference in the long run. It needs maintenance like any other machine, and if that maintenance isn’t carried out, then you might have to replace your terminal a lot sooner than you would expect. To keep them ticking along happily, let’s take a look at some of the key elements of maintenance for these crucial devices.

Cleaning Your EFTPOS Machine

The number one enemy of an EFTPOS terminal is dust. Dust gets into every nook and cranny, seeking out the essential mechanisms of a device and steadily wearing away at them until they cease to function. Therefore, you should try to dust your machine at least once a day. Use a cleaning card to get into the card swipe, a soft cloth to dust off the keypad, and an alcohol swab to make sure the printer is clean and ready to go.

We’ve found that businesses work better with an established schedule or routine, as the rotation of employees can mean essential processes getting lost in the mix. If you make cleaning the EFTPOS machine an essential part of day-to-day operations, then it won’t get swept under the rug.

In the event of spills or similar incidents, make sure to take care of it immediately. Unplug the machine before starting any cleaning, then blot away the spilled liquid until dry. Take an alcohol wipe and go over all of the pieces of the machine, put the cleaning card through the card swipe, and check to see how it works once turned back on.

Protecting Your EFTPOS Machine

EFTPOS maintenance isn’t just a matter of cleaning; it’s also about protecting the device from things that can wear it down. As previously mentioned, dust and liquid are a real issue for these machines. Another, more proactive way to stop these substances from getting into the delicate mechanisms of your terminal is to purchase a protective cover for the keys. Covers also speed up cleaning at the end of the day, making life much easier for you and your employees.

In addition, make sure to keep your terminal somewhere away from the sun’s rays if possible, and keep it away from areas in which it could incur damage, such as near the kitchen. Sunlight can overheat the machine during the day and wears the terminal’s appearance down significantly. This is especially relevant for a mobile EFTPOS terminal, which gets moved around a lot and is more susceptible to environmental damage.

No matter what, it’s crucial to regularly maintain your EFTPOS machine to prevent damage and accelerated wear. Replacing your terminals every six months is not financially sound, so do a little bit every day to save yourself a lot in the long run!
